Code: 6304-057

Dimensions:

W: 8cm (3.1")H: 5cm (2")L: 12cm (4.7")

An exceptionally rare very large silver military snuff box made by Thomas Bartleet of Birmingham in 1823. This was probably used in the officers mess and is crested with the insignia of the 59th Regiment of Foot, also known as the 2nd Nottinghamshire, which was formed in 1755. Under the Childers Reforms of 1881 it was amalgamated with the 30th (Cambridgeshire) Regiment of Foot to form the East Lancashire Regiment. This box is also remarkable because it has four lidded compartments, one on the top and three on the bottom. All separate pieces are hallmarked . The box is in surprisingly good condition with some wear to the engine turning and a couple of very small repairs. Mess silver was always subjected to a hard life often being used in raucous games. A fantastic piece for military and snuff box collectors.
